The word ‘lolcow’ is a portmanteau of ‘lol’ - laugh out loud and ‘cow’ - someone who is milked. A lolcow is someone that is baited or tricked into responding to trolls thereby “milking” them for reactions for the troll’s amusement.

The life of the lolcow is a story of tumultuous lies, deceit, manipulation, emotional breakdowns, crash outs, and financial ruin. The dramatic rise and fall story is familiar to us all. But unlike the fictional heroes of screen or Shakespeare, these are real life people that exist in the real world. And their real life story is broadcast for everyone to see on the internet. And not only is it broadcast online, but there is audience participation. Anyone can comment, post, superchat, etc. and reach out to the lolcow. The internet is both a transmitter and a receiver.

The story of the lolcow is a Shakespearian tragedy. In the beginning, it’s a story of triumph. They reached the top of their field and rose above the millions of other Youtubers. Then it descends into a tragedy. Their own personal flaws sowed the seeds of their destruction.
